The protocol utilizes the regular TLS-based security adopted in the OpenVPN to establish secure connections and encode data packets. For server authentication and forward secrecy, it adopts RSA certificates with 2048-bit key and ECDHE respectively.
While many providers opt for AES 256-bit encryption and 4096 RSA keys, Hotspot Shield uses AES 128-bit encryption with 2048 bit keys, which is considered to be weaker compared to the former. However, encryption is still strong enough to guarantee secure traffic.
